PLANTING RENOVATION
Felden, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire

The planting in this small garden near Hemel Hempstead was overgrown and visually confusing. The client wanted a more streamlined look, a consistent and limited colour palette with more shrubs and fewer herbaceous perennials.

Once we agreed a new planting plan, the garden was stripped of existing plants, retaining only those that could provide good structure and colour. Repetition of trees, shrubs and colours as well as symmetry immediately updated the overall appearance achieving a fresh look.
On the back border facing the house three beautiful Eucalyptus gunnii 'Azura' trees are now flanked by evergreen Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold' and Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb' shrubs clipped to round shapes, as well as deciduous Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' shrubs providing a darker and contrasting accent.
Herbaceous perennials include groups of deep wine-red Penstemon 'Andenken an Friedrich Hahn' as well as evergreen Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' grasses.

The purple and wine-red accents are repeated on both side borders using different plants compatible with the garden orientation.
On the shadier border repetition of Skimmia japonica 'Rubella', Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web', ferns and white hydrangeas provide striking foliage and colour.

The fence was repainted in black throughout to provide the perfect backdrop for the contemporary new planting scheme.
