FAMILY GARDEN
ST ALBANS, HERTFORDSHIRE

Functional, welcoming, and pollinator‑friendly, the redesigned garden now supports the needs and interests of every family member.

Entertaining, dining, and lounging areas are woven into generous planting, creating a space that feels both practical and immersive. A productive potager brings home‑grown vegetables and espalier fruit trees into daily life, while children enjoy a dedicated play zone complete with room for their guinea pigs.

The original garden presented several constraints: a lawn sloping towards the house, an awkward L‑shaped layout, deep shade from a neighbouring brick facade, and no level ground for a trampoline.

The redesign embraces the natural slope to introduce structure and purpose. Retaining walls and steps create clear transitions between adult and children’s spaces. A once‑cramped lounging corner is now a spacious gravelled potager defined by bespoke Corten‑steel frames for productive planting.

Lounging now takes place in the previously unused side return, while the dining area sits just outside the open‑plan living space for seamless indoor–outdoor flow. When not in use the area serves as a basket ball run.
A custom cantilevered bench built into the retaining wall provides permanent seating, even when outdoor furniture is stored away for winter.

The old trampoline has been replaced with a multi‑use climbing frame and swings, offering a more versatile and engaging play structure.

Beds and borders deliver colour and texture throughout the year, with layers of bulbs, flowering shrubs, trees, perennials, and foliage plants. Trailing plants along the edges softly spill onto the paved patio, creating a gentle transition between hard landscaping and planting.

A garden transformed. What was once a bare and underused outdoor space is now a vibrant, functional garden enjoyed by the whole family.
