FOLIAGE GARDEN
DEAL, KENT

This walled, sloping, south-west facing garden required a complete renovation following building works.
The new garden now comprises a patio to accommodate an outdoor dining table with seating for 6-8 people, as a continuation of the new open-plan kitchen, and a separate, more private seating area at the far end.

The sloping ground offered the opportunity to split the garden on two levels. Two separate lawn areas and the diagonal layout make the space look bigger and wider. A pergola between the two levels provides screening from the neighbours living opposite and the garden shed at the bottom near the gate is hidden behind a trellis.

High on the client's brief was the desire for an exuberant planting scheme with bold colours. Playing with textures, shapes and seasonality the brief was fully met.
The layout offers ample space for the desired lush foliage, and bold colours planting, including existing shrubs and rose climbers, a specimen tree (Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Pendulum’), apple and plum espalier trees and a number of flamboyant and exotic looking shrubs and climbers such as Clianthus puniceus, Campsis x tagliabuana 'Madame Galen' and the spectacular Leonotis leonurus.
